Dental Abutment Screws: Essential Components for Implant Stability
In this section, you can buy abutment screws for both straight and angled abutments made from strong and flexible Grade 23 titanium alloy, which is comparable in strength to Grade 5 but superior in plasticity. This is a critical parameter, since dental abutment screws are subjected to bending and tensile stresses. Clinical abutment screws are used for fixation to the implant in the patient’s mouth. This is a small but critical detail as a mistake in selection can lead to unscrewing and breakage of the screw. Note that the markings and names of screw retainers are not standardized. Abutment screws are called:
- prosthetic screw;
- retention screw;
- central abutment screw.
Dental abutment screws are categorized according to their application:
- Laboratory implant abutment screws are NOT BE BE USED for permanent fixation. They are intended to be used by dental technicians to attach dental components to the implant analogue. Most lab screws are made of Grade 3 or Grade 4 technical grade titanium and the type of surface finish does not allow for a strong enough connection that can last for years or even decades. Laboratory screws are reusable; you can buy a set and use them for several years.
- Clinical screws are designed to permanently hold the denture in the patient’s mouth. They are made of stronger Grade 5 or Grade 23 alloys. They often have a modified surface to increase bonding between the threads of the implant and the abutment. For example, anodized titanium is often used to coat abutment screws.
