Abutments are placed after the healing process is complete. However, the procedure of abutment placement, removal, fitting, and placement of the permanent restoration slightly traumatizes the gingiva. It takes 7 to 14 days to heal fully.

There are several prosthetic protocols. In some cases, the abutment is placed immediately at the time of the prosthetics and is already in place with the crown.
